Faith and Reason

"Faith usually emerges as reason fails. We put our trust in the sufficiency of material resources as long as these seem to sustain our requirements. Both the sick man and the physician have a common faith in medical knowledge until the disease is pronounced to be fatal. In that moment, skill relinquishes authority, and the future is returned to the keeping of the infinite power. In the presence of sovereign uncertainty, we become aware of our place in an infinite plan. It is now the plan which must carry on; we can go no further. Resignation to the Divine will comes at the end of most lives, but at the beginning of mysticism. Whether we know it or not, we live forever in the substance of the divine nature.
